Compare products across shops with Faved

Authors

Buying a pair of noise-cancelling headphones means a dozen tabs: the maker's own shop, a couple of retailers, a review or two. Each page lays out the price, rating and stock differently, so comparing them means flicking between tabs or copying numbers into a spreadsheet.

Here's how to do it in Faved instead: save the pages, let Faved pull out the details, and compare everything in one table.

Types, fields and Extract are available in Faved Cloud.

1. Create a Product type

Open Types and Fields, click New type and choose the Product preset. It comes with the fields you need for shopping: Name, Price, Currency, Brand, Rating, Review count, Availability, Categories and Screenshot.

You can rename, add or remove fields later, so treat the preset as a starting point.

2. Save product pages from any shop

On a product page, click the Chrome extension or the bookmarklet, or paste the link into Add in the app. Choose Product as the type and click Extract: Faved reads the page and fills in the fields before you save, so you can check them first.

The Chrome extension and the bookmarklet save the page exactly as you see it, so they also work on shops that show prices only when you're signed in.

3. Already saved a few? Extract them at once

If you saved some pages without extracting, there's no need to open them one by one. Select them in the list, click Extract in the bar at the bottom, pick the fields, and Faved reads every page in the background. You can follow the run in Activity.

4. Compare them in a table

Switch to Table view under View, and choose the columns you want to compare: Price, Brand, Rating, Review count and Availability. The Product type remembers its columns, so the table looks the same next time.

Now the comparison is a couple of clicks:

  • Sort by Price to see the cheapest first, and click it again to flip the order.
  • Filter Price to your budget, for example at most 250.
  • Sort by Rating to put the best-rated options on top.

Your search, filters and sort live in the page address, so you can bookmark the comparison and come back to it later.

5. Keep track of what you're considering

Add your favourites to a Wishlist option in your Tags, or create a global Project field, such as "New headphones", to group everything for one purchase, whatever its type.
